Spoilers !!!
Do you know howw tragic it can be when you have to make up a completely different story to convince yourself about your loved one's death ? Well that's exactly what happened in Memento. The TWIST in the end was one of the best plot twists in the history of cinemas. Leonard just created that entire story about Sammy so that he doesn't have to cop with the situation and the condition in which his wife died. He's been looking for a guy named John G. who killed his wife but in fact his wife survived the attack. But Lenny got a permanent short term memory loss. She just wanted her old Lenny back. She was diabetic as well. So she tested him by insisting him to give her insulin three times in a row. And of course Lenny didn't remember anything. She went into a coma and never opened her eyes again. Poor Lenny had no idea how she died so he created that entire story about Sammy Jankis and his wife when in fact Sammy never even had a wife. He convince himself that his wife died on the very night she was attacked and raped. A cop named Teddy helped him to track down his wife's attacker (NOT MURDERER) and kill him so that he thinks he killed his wife's murderer and got his revenge when in fact he's the one who's responsible for his wife's death. Her wife wanted to test him and convinced him to give her insulin again and again when she already took it. She thought maybe Lenny will remember it and she'll get back her old husband. But he never remembered because of his critical condition and gave her multiple doses of insulin as she insisted. He of course forgot the reason of his wife's death. She died from overdose of medicine. He got to know everything at the end of the movie. He got to know the real reason of her death, he got to know he already killed his wife's attacker only to completely forget it moments afterwards. He started hunting multiple John G.s over the couple of years. Because his life lacked a purpose and finding the criminal had given him one. So Teddy made him kill multiple criminals whom he thought was his wife's murderer. At the end he listens to the entire story and if he forgets it by chance he writes down, " Don't believe his lies. " He kills Teddy because he's convinced him to kill multiple innocent guys over the couple of years and made him a killer which he never wanted to become. Does he need to lie to himself constantly to be happy? Yes. In case of Teddy, he'll lie to himself. Sometimes you need to look in the mirror completely know yourself. Sometimes you need a purpose in life when you're lacking one. Maybe Leonard found the purpose of his life.
I don't think anyone calls this movie tragic. But I will. The pain of not remembering the reason of your wife's death, finally learning it only to forget it minutes afterwards; is sad as heck. Trying to track down your wife's murderer repeatedly again and again your entie life; does that sound like fun ? When I discovered the twist I literally screamed in shock. It was the very moment when the entire movie made complete sense and I thought I was a genius.
This movie is overwhelmingly sad. This movie has to be Christopher Nolan's VERY BEST. LOVED IT.
