Update July 14:
I am getting really tired of hearig Greg make fun of people based on appearance. We get it, he loathes fat people but really as an example every day he makes fun of Brian Stelter's appearance. Aside from the obvious rudeness and immaturity of his jabs and shallow judgments, realistically Brian and Greg are pretty even in the looks department so I am not sure where he gets the nerve. I am not one to appearance-shame, but since that seems to be what Greg understands I would say he is average at best. That makes his comments and juvenile behavior all the more baffling. This show would be excellent if he would stop with the immaturity and nastiness.
I generally like the show and find Greg’s openings to be politically insightful with just the right blend of truth, sarcasm and wit. Kat Timpf is a treasure and Tyrus could steal the show with his plain spoken perspectives. Probably my favorite part of the show is the occasional skit. Kat as the ever-tiresome, condescending Jen Psake is gold. I really like some of the recurring guests, such as Joe Machi and The Angry White Male, Tom Shillue. Parts of the shows are truly exceptional, and frankly some are just hard to watch. That is always because of Greg. As intellectually funny as he can be, he is just as likely to behave like a 12-year-old boy. He talked about the dessert ‘Spotted Dick’ on both the Five and Garfield this week. It was not funny either time unless you have the comedy IQ of an adolescent boy. His occasional creepy sexual innuendos are cringe-worthy. He had a conversation with Dr. Drew this week about finding the tattoo of him on his body. That is just simply not funny. He has this habit of saying something completely stupid and senseless then following with ‘I don’t even know what that means’. No one does. Speaking of lame, the virtual omsbudsperson skits miss the mark. Perhaps it is a creative idea, but it just falls flat. This show has great potential because Greg is obviously very intelligent and witty. If he could get out of his own way, he could be the best. He really doesn’t need to let his ratings go to his head; the pickings are pretty slim. In closing, I have wondered how the beautiful and inspirational Shannon Bream feels about being introduced as the evil Shannon Bream night-after-night and how the marvelous Dana Perino likes having her clothes called out routinely. Those are the kind of things he does that are maybe funny one time, two max. I imagine people around him really like him, but I also imagine he can probably be a lot to take. I am editing this to add that continued jabs at Kat and her marriage are also not funny anymore.
