Red all the Edgar Rice Burroughs novels (including the Tarzan and Pellucidar series) back in the early 60s when I was about 11. Although I enjoyed them as a child, I recognise now that they were unspeakably silly, racist and sexist. In my memory, John Carter always seemed to be saving Deja Thoris from "a fate worse than death". The film was actually slightly less ridiculous than Burroughs' novels. I just can't give it five stars as so many other reviewers have done.
