The poet is educated in English and worked in the USA as a professor of Linguistics. He was Indian by spirit and taste, though he lived in the USA for a long period and passed away in the foreign land too. His poetry contains Indian landscape, Indian mythos and ethos, people's living conditions and struggles, socio-political and cultural practices through strong images borrowed from Nature and life. Lovers of Indian English poetry can never overlook the significance of A. K. Ramanujan as an Indian poet who wrote in three languages including English, Tamil and Kannada.
