The acting is phenomenal.
Most of the songs featured, are above average.
The singing is beautiful.
The dancing, costuming and set design is abstract, but superb.
The plot takes *heavy* inspiration from Sia's personal life as a recovered alcoholic and drug addict.
The plot is certainly unique, although not free of cliches, and definitely feels a little confused.
The plot does not focus primarily on "Music" (the girl with autism). The message is not solely "people with autism are misunderstood and more complex than meets the eye"; it's more of a subplot.
The film actually centers around the older sister of Music, "Zu", who has to juggle an incredibly dysfunctional lifestyle with caring for and loving Music.
I, as a person who does not have first-hand experience with autistic persons, do not think the main character was badly or offensively portrayed in the slightest. A few times. I did however think "Is this a realistic reaction from an autistic person?", but other than that, I found myself very touched by the character and wanting to understand her.
I don't think this is a bad or or forgettable movie by any means. On the contrary, I enjoyed it a lot. The execution just wasn't perfect.
