Such potential and yet the Netflix writers had to find a way to mess this up.
Amateurish writing barely conceals their ability to come up with a compelling arc or any consistency in their story telling.
Just as it is with other new Netflix shows, the story stirs up unnecessary issues, having Wednesday deliver quick retorts about “mansplaining” even though the show established that her character is disconnected from all social media and societal norms which would render her blind to the new age lingo.
The show has obvious undertones about racism sexism colonialism and a whole bunch of other issues that are poorly handled. The writers want to address these issues without doing it skillfully; choosing instead to carelessly throw these things into the story and hope it works. I have no problem with addressing real life issues, but this attempt was simply lazy.
I liked the characters and I think Jenna Ortega has done a brilliant job. However, any pedestrian viewer can tell that they writing and story telling is lazy and amateurish.
The script is written at the level of a high schooler and the story is delivered sloppily. For a show with such potential, it’s hard to admit that it was just mishandled on every level.
