I saw the movie 50 years ago in the theater and it left an impression that has lasted to this day. Jaws was fun including or especially with Williams infamous music but Blue Water White Death was very real, a strong case for the big screen experience. It was great fun to finally read the back story and all the hard work and frustration that went into putting the pieces together. I enjoy film but the medium seems to simplify or exaggerate even with the best of intentions. Blue Meridian is a good example of getting a much fuller picture of what goes into an adventure.
I have to agree with the comments about the whaling aspects of the book, they are very disturbing but are a very real part of the narrative and delivered with the writer’s usual essential need for the whole story.
Strange to read about such vital and adventurous people who are now for the most part gone. Stan Waterman just recently passed at the age of 100. I can well imagine reading this nearer its publishing date and the sense of adventure would have been more keen than nostalgic.
