This game is mostly bad but it has it's perks
The gameplay is very cool, you can tell that they put a lot of time in.
-You can break glass windows to loot stores and complete objectives.
-There is also a new rope/cord system that's very creative, you have to use pulleys and ledges to climb into or out of areas, or to plug in electrical wires, that sort of thing.
-The crafting table is almost perfect, for some upgrades you can watch your character literally craft the upgrades to the weapon right in front of you.
Okay now for the negatives.
-The story. (SPOILERS). Let me be clear, this is the furthest you can get from a feel good story. This entire game is a revenge story, but in the end of the game, you don't get revenge? Basically the end of the story, Ellie loses everything. Joel, dead. Jessie, dead. Tommy, crippled and probably hates her. Dina and the baby, left her. Her ability to play guitar, gone with 2 of her fingers. Basically the ending makes me wish that Joel didn't save Ellie at the end of the first game at all.
-The guitar. Over the course of the game, you find like 4 times to just jam out on guitar, Joel had taught Ellie how to play in the beginning of the game, and Ellie began to play the song Joel first sang to her several times, but never finished because she got emotional. By the end of the game, if Ellie had kept her fingers, returned to her empty home, picked up Joel's guitar, and sang Joel's song, I would have given this game back some points for at least making it seem like Ellie still had a shred of Joel's memory left. But she can't play with her messed up hands and she abandons the guitar, effectively leaving Joel completely in the past.
-Ellie's character. Even before Joel was brutally murdered by Abby, Ellie was missing her whimsical nature that made her an instant fan favorite in the first game. The game showed she had gone through some stuff, but that was true in the first game too. It takes a long time for you to see classic/awesome Ellie in this game.
-Abby. When the first thing you do in the game is brutally murder a beloved returning character like Joel MINUTES after he saves your life from a horde of infected, you're never coming back from that. The game makes you play as Abby for like half the game AFTER this, as they try to justify her hatred of Joel, and the player is killing themselves as much as possible. But when you have to play as Abby and nearly beat the life out of Ellie, that's when the game definetly lost me.
-The false ending. SPEAKING OF^^^
I feel like having Abby win the first fight with Ellie was such a mistake. Abby spared Ellie and Dina, and Ellie didn't care and came back for a rematch. Ellie beats Abby in a tooth and nail fight on the beach, after Abby had apparently been tortured and starved. But Ellie chickens out right before she drowns Abby in the ocean, letting her go. I feel like the game didn't need that second storyline, especially considering it was so short.
So basically, the biggest part of the game is unfortunately the worst part. I wish the writers had done a better job of making this sequel an enjoyable journey, but instead they focused too hard on doing something noone would see coming. I recommend buying the game, because the gameplay IS fun, and I kind of hope they make a third one so they can clean up their mess, but just know it'll leave a bad taste.
