Representation MATTERS and while the actress, Christian, does her best to portray her, I believe she does not best represent Selena. Selena was known to be a brown, indigenous, curvy, and very talented young woman. While I have no issue with Christian not looking like Selena in terms of facial appearance, I was disappointed that her family didn't choose an actress with a more similar skin tone and body shape. These things are important. The wigs are horrible, but the costumes are lovely! And while the first season does not focus entirely on Selena, I did appreciate the continued back story regarding the rise of the band and their struggles. I would have definitely loved to have seen more of their childhood, juggling school and fame, where they grew up, their struggles as siblings, etc. Everything seemed very rushed and very carefully written rather than portraying all the ugly and the bad that the family went through. Mrs. Quintanilla also deserved more than just simply being a worried mother/wife. I think the best portrayal of the series thus far has been Noemi Gonzalez who portrays Suzette and Ricardo Chavira as Abraham Sr. Overall, I wanted to know the person behind the singer and her struggles in her personal life and with Chris as well as a Mexican-American female in a male dominated world. Nevertheless, I will watch season 2. PS its hard not to compare this series to the 1997 film, but unfortunately you can't help but do so.
