To say THE TOYBOX (2018) is one of the scariest films I've ever seen, is an understatement. It is chilling from start to finish, and it never lets up. The suspense builds from the very first frame.
A young boy coming home late at night on his bike passes a dark camper on the street near his house. From that moment forward it completely terrifies. Tom Nagel directs, but he also produced, edited, and helped write the story. Brian Nagel and Jeff Denton also helped produce and write the story. But, they also act in the film, too.
Driven by a very eerie score, composed by Holly Amber Church, the story moved at a good and even pace. Tom's editing and unique camera angles on certain shots adds an ambiance missing in most horror-suspense films of the time. It is a refreshing original that promises to terrify and shock you all throughout its 94 minutes.
An estranged father (Greg Violand), for reasons explained later in the story, buys a used camper with the hope that a road trip with his sons (Brian Nagel and Jeff Denton), granddaughter (Malika Michelle), and daughter in-law (Denise Richards), will reacquaint him with his family.
Setting out, they meet a brother and sister (Matt Mercer and Mischa Barton) stranded on the side of the road. But not long after giving them a lift to the nearest town, things take a terrifying turn. This is NOT your usual horror/slasher film. In fact, there is nothing predictable in the well stitched plot. It is a solid piece of film making from start to finish.
The opening credits open over the collection of forensic research by investigators. Still pictures also weave through the sequence. It is artful and eerie, begging the question: What is it that happened, and who did it happen to? As the movie plays out, it becomes quite clear that this group of travelers is not alone.
The camper becomes powerless and isolated 40 miles from the nearest road, and in the middle of nowhere in the desert, the very survival of everyone is left to question -- and chance. There is no way I can go into detail without spoiling anything, so this review is spoiler-free out of respect for the rest of the audiences who have not yet seen this film.
I recommend THE TOYBOX highly. and hope that you enjoy it immensely, just as I did. Nothing about this movie disappoints. With every turn you never see coming, there is also an "OH WOW!" moment that accompanies it.
I hold it in the same esteem and regard as John Carpenter's original classic, HALLOWEEN. While THE TOYBOX is much different, I will attest to this, I watched this in broad daylight, and was scared out of my wits many times. Five stars for THE TOYBOX from its frightening start to its shocking finish.
Pick it up on Blu-ray, DVD, or stream it now on HULU. If you like being scared, this is the movie for you.
