I found the screenplay to be trite, one-dimensional, and horribly acted by most of the supporting cast. Yes, Hudson has the vocal chops for the role but the "action" over the decades was never fully defined and left me wondering where we were in her life, what kids were by what fathers, and down-played the toxicity of the male relationships in her life and completely UNDER emphasized her out-sized actions as an activist. I was there, I watched the struggles, I felt cheated out of a wonderful episodic story for the sake of expensive wardrobe changes.
