Antique Macabre

The author does well with conveying horror, but the rest of the writing leaves something to be desired. There are WAY too many unnecessary adverbs, and the characters's voices don't differ much. Any character could have spoken any of the dialogue. At times, the author gets his sayings and idioms mixed up, such as "take lightly to" instead of "take kindly to," among others. It reminded me of how the character of Fez on "That '70s Show" used to get things mixed up because English wasn't his first language.

J.D. Barker gets inside your head with this one. He takes us along on a wild and sinister ride that spans 26 years, crosses the entire country, and introduces us to a motley group of characters, including a young boy who's seen more loss than any eight year old should, a precocious young girl who mysteriously appears on a cemetery bench one day, a rifle-toting nanny of sorts, a chain-smoking waitress, a hit man, a burgeoning drug lord, an obsessed police detective, and the most beautiful man you've ever seen. Barker will have you checking your rear-view mirror for white cars and scanning every crowd for people in white coats.
