There’s no real magic here. Everything and everyone in this movie reflect very typical stories from contemporary American society, using the most cliché, overused themes and plots we see in mainstreams. The first half of the film is just another “mean girl” story, wrapped in CGI, shallow incidents, highly stereotypical characters.
As the story progresses, we see some of The Wizard of Oz fable, which is delightful. However, overall, it never worth it being made into a franchise, competing for an Oscar, or spending three hours in a theater to watch it. It’s just too long—far too long. It could’ve easily been trimmed down to an hour and a half.
It’s a big failure, despite the producers and marketing team trying hard to create a “Barbie-like” vibe for audiences.
