For this to be the author's first novel, I definitely applaud him. I also applaud him for tackling current day subjects such, mental health, police brutality, and young love. However, as a black man, it was obvious the book was written by a person from the outside writing about what they thing interactions between police and blacks are like. It almost felt forced, and honestly I eventually had to force myself to finish reading it. Parts of the book make great group discussion, and the writing, character development is great, but not a book I'd hurriedly pick up to read.
