Fun film but is no one going to talk about the egregious acts of DOMESTIC ABUSE?!?! Emily blunts character excessively punches her love interest, "the rock", several times throughout the film including directly after he saves her life! Is this really the message Disney wants to send to children? That it's okay for women to physically abuse their partners? Had the roles been reversed this would never pass.
I'm confused because, on one hand, the movie tries so hard to be progressive in its view: a female scientist, a woman in pants, a gay man...
But, in an attempt to make a female lead "strong" like so many films, they decide to make her violent. She punches people because she's angry or mad, including her love interest she ends up with in the end. It's giving me abuse...it's giving me colonization. It's very much the male gaze of what a strong woman looks like.
And also there is a difference between being strong minded and being dumb. Some of her, " I am a woman, here me roar" moments are just unreasonably stupid! Do male writers think women just lose all our wits and logical judgment whenever we're in a bind. It's ridiculous! Why is she so stupid? This isn't a feminist or womanist portrayal of women. She can be reasonable and willful without being reckless and entitled.
NATIVE PEOPLE PUSHED ASIDE: once again a film where indigenous folks are pushed to the margins as one dimensional, magical side characters used for fear and comedic relief, only existing to unquestioningly support the agenda of a white woman come to take their ancient treasure. Nothing strange about that! Imagine the same film had been told, with one of the descendants of the indigenous Amazonians playing emily blunt's role...How much more complex and interesting it would be if she was a scientist searching for the tears, if she found out Frank's real identity, how torn she would be knowing her ancestors cursed him...would she give him the last petal? Missed opportunity if you ask me.
The movie is incredibly historically inaccurate, but this can easily be overlooked by young children. Otherwise, the movie is enjoyable, fun, you will laugh out loud, sometimes at the jokes, but other times at how absurd the plot is.
