Okay so I saw this movie because my son dragged me. I knew nothing about it but knew I probably didn’t want to see it. I was right. It’s not that this movie is bad, just the opposite. This movie is so very horribly awkward and painful. Hard hard scenes to watch (all the scenes pretty much) are masterfully wrung out extensively. The minute you think you understand what’s happening you are hit with a massive curve ball. I know everyone is screaming about gratuitous violence, but it’s the gut wrenching emotions of this movie that is probably where the concern should be. It is truly disturbing to people that don’t identify with this character, and terrifying that a lot people do. Joaquin Phoenix deserves an Oscar for this one too. Raw and visceral. An upgraded Taxi Driver! Ironically, with Robert Deniero in this cast!
