I bought the hype - and feel stupid for it. Dumb movie. A few laugh-out-loud moments but otherwise chaotic - too preachy and message driven. Dumb final “punch line” which I’m sure parents will enjoy explaining to their 4-year-olds. Heinous song at the start of closing credits. Margot Robbie is charming, in spite of the script. Ryan Gosling is Ken-ish. Enjoyed the Ken dance number - although it came out of nowhere, as did Gosling singing since no one else does in the whole movie. But still. Totally. Lame. Movie. (Seemed low budget.)

Don’t believe the big-media reviews. I’ve read them and am convinced none actually saw the movie (or saw it sober). Case-in-point reviewer from WSJ refers to Mr. Laurence as Laurie’s father (he’s his grandfather.) The movie is very hard to follow unless you know the book/previous movies. Their relationships and interactions are far too contemporary/modern. It’s missing the chemistry in the romances and relationships of the sisters (key!) - shocking with all these A-list actors. Seeing roots Demarcation in Marmee’s hair in the first scene was a distraction out of the gates. Casting was odd overall. Very little character development. Jo was the best character. Emma Watson’s Meg had some nice moments, too. She had inconsistency in her accent. Which is a bugger. Too much telling - not enough showing. It was a little preachy at a few spots - which was an unnecessary addition to drive home the feminist slant the story tells on its own merits. There were parts that were very visually rich. Mostly scenery. The soundtrack got better about 1/2 way through.
