I was extremely skeptical about this show even though I’m a huge DC fan. I didn’t feel it was going to work. Alan Tudyk as an antagonist sounds at best like a bad idea. April Bowlby I only knew from Two and a Half Men, Matt Bomer from White Collar, Brendan Frasier from The Mummy, and Diane Guerrero I had never heard of. I didn’t see this going well. Never in my life have I ever been so wrong.
I was almost immediately hooked. Brendan Frasier as Robotman is, by himself, enough to make this a great show. His broken mentality because of his poor life choices in the past combined with his humor, father like tendencies towards Jane, and being the glue/heart of the team makes him one of the best characters on tv to date.
Next is Alan Tudyk. As stated above, I just couldn’t see him being a good, let alone a great bad guy. His narration is hilarious. His motivations are based on rock solid foundations. And his general demeanor make him one of the best villains on tv right now. I can’t picture anyone else playing Mr. Nobody. He nailed it.
Matt Bomer as Negative Man also surprised me. I assumed, with him being a pretty boy, his acting range was limited to being the cocky thief he was in White Collar. Again, I was wrong. He produces the most “feels” in this show. The torment of his double life from his past is soul crushing. His relationship with his energy based body snatcher will provide tons of entertainment(happy and sad no doubt) for years to come.
April Bowlby as Elasta-girl is another casting choice I just couldn’t see working. While I believe she is the weakest of the characters in terms of likability, her arc is astounding. Her realization that she was a monster before she became what she is today is powerful and moving. She is by no means a bad character, just the one I connected with the least. I have no doubt that will change.
Diane Guerrero as Crazy Jane. Where do I even start? She is spectacular in every way. She nails each one of her personalities. Learning her story, which at the end of season 1 hasn’t even begun yet, is at the very least intriguing and at best one of the greatest character arcs of all time. Even better, she is the epitome of a strong female character. Something I assumed no one in Hollywood knew how to write anymore. Shrouded by doubt and defeat, she presses onward. Even the one time she almost caved, with a little help, she soared. I could write this entire review about only her. That’s how amazing she is. Even though Hammerhead or Silver Tounge would hurt me, I think I love Jane.
This show is funny, moving, interesting and the only thing on TV in the past decade besides Game of Thrones and Legion that got me to sit through the entire season. Waiting for season 2 to come out is going to be one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. Watch this show!
