I suspect the dissenters are reacting to Gregory Peck’s Atticus. This version was Harper Lee’s first attempt at creating a story about a place and time in the South. Then she revised it to make it more palatable to audiences at the time. This version must be read to get the full story she was trying to convey. The historical, geographic, and political descriptions are essential. They resonate in the events and movements of subsequent years.
