the story had some promise. the relationship between the sisters was nice. of course there were some huge common sense holes in both its premise and its execution. having a background in psychology & also being a combat soldier & well-seasoned prepper i can tell you with 100% certainty, they'd have no lasted as long as they did. even if they were at only 2k ft altitude, having lived in the pacNW for decades, i know also with that much glass & no real inside heat source or power, what that winter could be...even without a REAL winter, like you see from the cascades on eastwards.
also, the gas issue. simply coasting down to town, keeping the engine mostly at idle, then burning only on the return trip, which the suv would've prolly gotten at least 15mpg. also, anthing you'd drive 35-45mph to in 30 or so minutes would NOT take 3days to walk!
12hs x2mph =24mpd.
then there's the electrical issue. if it was a solar HCME (carrington) event, then there'd be no daytime radio also all electronics...including solar power, would be rendered permanently useless. consider that glass & wood do not create a farraday protection. also, let's not forget the auroras.
if it was a grid surge, then where were those extremely loud transformer explosions? ...you know the ones you can hear in a dense atmosphere better than 20miles away. also a grid issue would only flicker. transformers would blow before that.
the house, with all of those exposed glass windows would not hold heat and given the hole in the roof, would have "black mold" inside of six months, with the drywall turning green & falling off due to humidity exposure...even without the persistent rains.
add to this that daddy did at all prep his girls for living in the woods, or prep for inevitable power disruptions that come every winter & spring in the pacNW, or the supply chain issues that happen when you're living in an isolated, heavily forested, & vertically challenging terrain. any responsible person would have fitted wood covers for the windows, a significant toolkit, and lots of stored self-stable supplies. at least 6months worth. oh yeas, and stabilized, stored fuel. if you are at all serious & informed, then that would be diesel...& a cool, temp-controlled place to store it.
oh yeah, and really...just one firearm? REALLY? that's awfully *tard!
also dad was clever with the shoestring, but oddly careless with maintaining the chainsaw. i smell plot device.
now we come to the millennial issue.
i've seen millennials lose their mind completely and put their lives at tremendous immediate risk just because they can get signal on their mobile device. to think that two such incapables would have survived 2 years, with much of it alone...without any training or preparation (the most important being mental, emotional, & spiritual!) is utterly preposterous. i have seen what happens to millennials under extreme stress. that is what we have a training course for such otherwise unfit-for-survival sorts.
once to take it, endure it...you embrace it! ...and it changes you! ...it EMPOWERS you!
so over the whole, there was decent acting, & some moments were actually decently portrayed. some of the ugliness that people under stress will show. i teach about this! ...so i give it 3stars for this merit, but i cannot ignore the obvious derelictions & plot devices...so ONLY 3 star!
also, i know what it is like to lose both of your parents tragically. i did in aug2013 & june2014! i very much empathized on that!
