Pretty terrible. I had high hopes. Basically, it portrays a pathetic, miserable man with no real redeeming qualities, falling for a toxic, worthless woman who doesn’t really like him even. So… you don’t ever really feel invested in these unlikable characters. Then the movie just goes on and on. I sat through it, thinking “ok, well… it’s a bio pic, so I’m learning what these people were really like.” There’s value to that. Afterward, I read that wasn’t the case; that it’s not historically accurate. So basically, it’s a story centered around a couple miserable, self-serving, pathetic people, with sex scenes that make sex seem just gross and unappealing, and neither really “grow up” or develop. They just wallow in their miserable tendencies till the end.

Terrible. Unlikable characters. Drags on and on.

The movie sucks. And for many, many reasons. First off, the title should be “Better Off Single” or perhaps “In the Orbit of a Toxic Woman.” The writing, acting, and direction lack the nuance needed to do what it’s trying to do... portray the inner struggles of sustaining a marriage. The female character is so overboard and neurotic, you have a hard time assigning value to her side. Meanwhile the male character is far too much of a whipped puppy, insecure, fearful and brow beaten. It makes you sad that he’s stuck trying to impress his kids and wife. They needed to balance these characters more to achieve the story’s purpose. Additionally, the two leads are far too old for the parts. The both look like they’re pushing 70, and yet have two kids about 10 years old. It just didn’t work. Overall, it’s a depressing movie. Will Farrell has his moments in it, but overall it’s a genuine flop.
