These shorts look extraordinary, and the imagination that's on offer in terms of the visuals and initial premise is sometimes breathtaking. What lets it down are the stories. There is often no proper narrative - it's usually just: story starts in a weird location, some people engage with some weird things, some ludicrous cartoon violence occurs, roll credits. The beauty of the visuals can often overcome this, but the whole thing looks like a bunch of showreels for people who want to go on to something grander. I will keep watching because among the banal are some really beautiful little episodes, like the Drowned Giant.
I hadn't realised before I started watching that it takes inspiration from the 1981 movie Heavy Metal which I remember seeing at the cinema and which I assumed had been long forgotten. It appears not!
