This movie is a two-hour-long double fault: It's the worst sports movie ever made, and it is one of the worst movies in the history of movies. Spectacularly stupid and boring at every level, I can't believe I was dumb enough to watch it through to the end. I normally drop any movie quickly that's as horrible as this one but I kept thinking it had to get better. It didn't.
I've spent much of my life on the tennis court -- my all-time favorite hobby -- and some of it writing about pro tennis, so I got suckered into this one. But even tennis fans will find Challengers too dumb to watch. One attractive actress doesn't make for a good movie. A non-tennis fan would have trouble even understanding the premise of the movie, or moments when an understanding of tennis scoring is required.
Too many scenes drag on for ages. And the "dramatic" ending is so stupid and inconceivable that it makes the movie a joke. When one player jumps so high so close to the net as he goes up to hit an overhead smash, there's no way in real life any player -- not even the old slammer Pete Sampras -- would jump so high that close to the net that his momentum would carry him across the net, fall and crack his skull. You would have to take a long, running head start to even attempt it. And then for the "protagonist" to make the absurd jump and then have his frenemy catch him in the air to keep him from cracking said skull. The movie ends there, with no resolution to really any of the who-cares plot points it spent two hours failing to develop.
Do not waste two hours (it felt like two months) watching this piece of trash movie. You're welcome!
