Itโs the smash-hit blockbuster that started one of the most beloved franchises of all time, 1985โs โBack to the Futureโ centres on the story of Marty McFly, a high school student from Hill Valley, CA who dreams of making a huge impression on the public with his music-playing abilities, especially with his girlfriend Jennifer (Claudia Wells). Heโs also good friends with the eccentric Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), who has just invented a time machine out of a DeLorean. After the experiment goes horribly wrong, Marty McFly is sent back to the year 1955. Along the way, he encounters his future parents and Biff Tannen (Thomas W. Wilson), the latter of whom is a vicious bully who constantly pushes his father (Crispin Glover) into getting his work done. Unfortunately, Martyโs interaction with his mother (Lea Thompson) results in his own existence being jeopardized and now he must do everything he can to get them back together and return to his proper place in time before itโs too late.
When I was a kid (and this might seem like Iโm living under a rock), but I hardly knew about this movie. The most that Iโve ever seen was the ending cliff-hanger scene with Doc Brownโs iconic line (โRoads, where weโre going we donโt need roadsโ). Other than that, I forgot about it until one day when my sister asked if I wanted to have a Back to the Future marathon. Right as I got done watching it, I immediately fell in love with it. The plot was original and engaging, the characters were unforgettable, and the writing was memorable with some of the best lines put into the film. Also, the soundtrack features catchy songs from Huey Lewis and a great cover of Chuck Berryโs โJohnny B. Goodeโ in the dance sequence.
Personally, I think Part II is better because it expands upon what we already know and I remember all the times it was brought up in conversations with its future predictions, especially when October 21, 2015, finally came around (referred to as BTTF Day). Despite that, this is still a beautifully made film with great chemistry and characters that are bound to stick with you once you see it for the first time.
I highly recommend this to anyone interested in time travel and those who overall just want to have a good time (especially Part II).
