I find myself always disagreeing with Piers Taylor and his ideas. I have seen him use Dexion for a staircase in a house, put durable floor coverings on walls, convert part of an integral garage into an habitable room leaving 1/4 of the garage and leaving the full width garage door in situ and on view from the front of the house (suggesting it is now a store for bikes),and in the latest episode that I have seen; recommended a peg board to put dowls in to hang cups from, in a £10,000 kitchen. He stated that it looks like a Thousand pound addition. I don't know where he gets his ideas from but it looked like a Thirty Quid addition to me.
I am a Surveyor and I have completed some Self-build projects myself. Me am my partner have renovated and put character back into a house that was built pre-1830. Therefore, we put things back that were in keeping with the period and what people would expect to see in such a property. We are learning all the time, but will not be adopting any of this guy's ideas or techniques.
I know the series is based on a £100k property and therefore limited budget, but Piers Taylor is always successful in making things look cheap and tacky.
I was always impressed with the ideas and efforts of Tommy Walsh and the guy in the American/Canadian property series Holmes on Homes. These two and a few others show their competence/skills and deserve respect for what they do.
Piers Taylor just comes across as someone trying to coerce and influence the people in the program to do it his way and I think you can see that most of the time they are not happy with his abstract ideas.
If he was my Architect, I am afraid I would have worked him out and we would have parted company very quickly. .
