My wife’s big into the whole boomstagram thing and reads all the trendy books. This is the one of two series I’ll read with her so fyi I’m not huge into romance aspect of any series.
Cons first:
Violet and Xadens relationship is damn near cringeworthy with how unhealthy, toxic and obsessive it is. The book could really benefit with dialing back the “I can’t live without you, nothing else matter but you” mentality. The two of them could learn a thing or two about their dragons. That couple had a healthy balance and relationship, but their riders act like a couple high schoolers in the honeymoon phase.
Cliff hangers will always suck, no matter how much I love the book.
Loose ends. Definitely some plot points that kinda just went nowhere. Like heavy stuff that lasts a chapter or two then disappears from the plot.
Pros:
Battle scenes. Epic.
Adventure. Love it. The book widens the scope and introduces us to life beyond the continent.
Relationships. Every side character gets a moment to shine. We learn about them, their background, their relationship with their dragons/gryphons. I found myself attached to the different characters more than Violet and Xaden. Which seems to happen a lot with most of these trendy books I read.
Pacing. Some people didn’t like it, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. It felt like it went from one adventure to another. One big reveal to another, and it kept me reading wanting more. But to be fair that also ties into the loose ends I was talking about. You would think all the different plot points would come together to make one big story, but it’s kinda paced out like episodes in a tv series. “What’s our big adventure this episode!?”
Overall:
A really enjoyable read for me. Definitely some parts that didn’t sit right but, I had a good time with it and look forward to the next book.
