Deep and complexed. Like all relationships.
The story is a commentary on what it is to feel connected to people, things, and yourself! This is an existential journey that explores human relationships and how we define ourselves. It points out that we only really know people as we choose to know them, and then define ourselves through those parameters. Hen is told she should not play music, (music being a symbol of freedom in her case), because Junior understands that through music Hen is free to be "someone else". Hen chooses to stop playing because she defines herself through the lens of her past relationship to Junior and how their love made her feel. This, in turn validates Junior's definition of himself (as a king archetype) and how he defines their relationship, both being of conservativism, connected to the land, house, family history ect. Junior views Hen as an object, as much a part of his physical world as his house, but also literally permanent like his house. He loves her because she defines him through their relationship in the traditional sense (husband and wife). But he knows he would not necessarily love who she would be if she were free. All juniors actions are taken to keep Hen from developing in any real sence. This is juxtaposed with a world where change is happening fast, technology, space travel, the climate etc. However, Hen works a job that is menial, has few prospects and appears stuck sometime in the 1900's. Hens journey is one of object to objective. Her freedom is earned through the realisation that her love has made her a prisoner.
