Episode 1-3
Casting is inaccurate and very white washed. The racism is so blatant and ridiculous.
Each daemon is a prop that exists for pretty colors and as pets in the show. In the book they are attached at the hip and are shown every bit as much, if not more, than the humans. Daemon interactions are explored and explained in the book, and you understand their purpose.
This show says that daemons look like pets and behave like such, unless a daemon kills another, then they appear important.
The alethiometer is an ugly square that doesn't move? Like in the book it is described as a circle with 1 needle always moving, and 3 that can be moved by dials on the alethiometer. The needle is pointedly said that it moves CONSTANTLY.
The show makes it appear as if the alethiometer is only able to be seen moving if it actively has a question asked.
Also, there are so many scenes littered throughout these episodes that just don't exist in the book. Why does Lyra find things in a desk? Why does Tony go to the apartment? Why does Boreal touch a daemon in the first two hours?
The book makes it very pointedly clear that daemon touching is forbidden for so long so that when someone's daemon is touched there is an actual impact on the reader..
Also why is Lyra more of a coward here? She loved the Gyptian people and was actually berated by Ma Costa for thinking herself too like them... And instead the show has her being an annoying, flippant, cowardly and downright childlike most times. Where did the amazing Lyra Solvertongue go?
Episode 4: LIN MANUEL MIRANDA is the only reason I am watching more of this show.. Lee Scoresby. Hester is a Daemon, she actually IS one. Her character matches his so well.
The fat guy with the snake (Dr lanselius) is wearing a fat suit in the show... He looks like it, and behaves like it. He doesn't move like someone who has any weight on his body... And the jars in the basement make no sense. Lyra went outside to identify the cloud pine... But okay.
Where are the Daemons though? They don't show them barely at all still, daemons should be highlighted... Not downplayed.
All the details told to Lyra are misplaced in time though its so wroooong.
But again with the no daemons in fights and why is Hester the only other daemon that speaks? Everyone's should be chatting or at least making some dang noise.
Lee has so many questions and he feels different but gods is he an amazing character.
Thank you Lin, for actually understanding and playing a character rather than reading lines and making faces.
Iorek Byrnison and Lee Scoresby are perfect so far in the rest of this cesspool of a show.
