I am probably not smart enough to fully understand both the lyrical and horrific parts of this novel that is actually based on history. But I consider it an important novel about the impact immense tragedy has on the generation that experienced it but also the generations to follow. I visited Jeju in 1984, but had no idea about its history at that time. So, challenging as it was to read, I really appreciate the history behind this novel, as well as Han Kang’s personal experiences as a Korean writer. I am glad she was awarded the 2024 Nobel prize in Literature.
