Are you kidding? Pedro and St. Nick together?
I think many have a jaundiced view of this film.
While it is, at times, a balls-out comedy, some of the subtler comedic nuances that inhabit this film are missed by less eagle eyed viewers.
Yes, absolutely enjoy it as a funny buddy comedy, but the performances of the two leads really transcend the genre.

While I found the movie wanting when I viewed it for the first time, I was gobsmacked at my second viewing. The trick? Turn off the color. Suddenly it is transformed into what looks like a 1940s serial with great special effects! It improves the movie expotentially.
What it doesn't do is forgive some of the performances (Tim Curry) or excesses, but it's still uniquely enjoyable. I recommend seeing it on a Saturday afternoon with popcorn.

Unfortunately, the title sounds like a romance novel, and while there is certainly a grand romance involved, this is literature at it's finest.
From the first chapter I was captivated, and not just by the story told, although that was mesmerizing in and of itself.
Jon Clinch's writing style is such that, while you want to stop and wallow in a superb and inspired paragraph or sentence, you are compelled to carry on because you know there is more to come.
Look, this is a wonderful book by a great author. Read it and just try to prove me wrong.
