This show is compelling to watch primarily because the viewer will have no idea what will happen next.
Characters will appear from thin air, the show will change to black and white, and will devote an entire episode to the the religious whims of the protagonist all whilst the entire story jumps across generations like a Christopher Nolan mindbender.
The pacing is utter madness.
SPOILERS ahead.
Whilst captivating to watch and well acted across the board, the motivations of the characters don’t add up, although their arcs do rather hurriedly conform by the end.
Namely:
Maternal Grandma: shows no love and nothing but contempt for the granddaughter. Happy to put her out in the rain yet is suspicious enough of the new church lady (crazy grandma) to travel to a knife fight and her ultimate demise.
Sex pervert dude: obsessed and a weirdo sure. On one hand protective enough to butcher another predator but not enough to stop him from nonchalant rape. “I love you mask girl, I’ll take one for the team and clean up the body [begs her to leave]. Jokes, check-up rape time.”
Evil grandma: the writers were one step away from making her be like, “nobody can kill my son but me”. Hates and belittles her son, then becomes a deranged psychopath even after she knows, at minimum, he is dating a sex doll.
Mask girl: going to love the child to death and call her pretty even if she turns out to be ugly. Next minute: doesn’t attempt to contact her daughter once in 10 years. Next minute: prison escape to save daughter after magically teleporting to the house which she knows is the right address after 10 years in prison.
Just too many conflicts that seemingly could have been avoided. Maternal GM could have had a few scenes where despite initial coldness, developed a bond with the granddaughter (the same way they hinted well about the evil GM had).
Could have made sexual pervert guy a heart of gold that died saving mask girl.
Evil grandma could have simply just loved her son more which would make her devastation more relatable.
Mask girl: no reason why she needed to have forgotten or ignored her daughter the years in prison to explain her subsequent desperation.
A fun but erratic watch.
