I have not read all of the books unfortunately, and I am not an expert in the lore. I look at this show from the same standpoint as the MCU. The books are source material, but the movies and shows are their own thing. That being said, this show is really good at times. The relationship between Elrond and Durin is by far the best plot point, and most of the others are pretty good to. However, I have one large grievance. The writers feel scared to me.
I’ll try not to spoil anything, but the stakes seem laughable at times, and at others they’re just insulting. There is a scene in this series that is almost ripped from fellowship, and yet while in that massive moving moment from the movie is heard breaking, this scene in ROP has no heart and failed to make me feel anything. It felt like an insult to the movie.
I really am enjoying this show, but I hope that at some point the writers will just take off the gloves and go all out. I cannot at this time believe any of their characters are in physical danger, and so the best storyline is the one that deals entirely with social stakes that I feel they are willing to deliver on. Most characters are great, the writing is good, and the visuals are fun. But aside from the Elrond/Durin storyline, none of the characters feel like they can be harmed. That is the problem with ROP.
The good news is that, with the exception of a certain trio of characters, the writers are willing to start giving some effort to emotion and consequence, and I think it’s on the right track. I am still very excited for future episodes.
