If you are looking for a ripping good read, masterfully re-creating the drama of the Nazi years this is one for you. If you are looking for objective history that illuminates the causal factors that led to events happening as they did, these volumes are a waste of time. Mr. Ulrich is like most of his fellow scholars, firmly in the grip of that genre called condemnatory history which is de riguer for German historians. The story can only be told one way. The French biographies of Napoleon suffer the same malady, in reverse, which is why, despite being the Hitler of the 19th century, tourists can buy cute little plaster busts of him in Paris. Likely they'll be selling the Hitler version in 100 years.
