I’ve played all the Arkham games and this one doesn’t really compare in my opinion. The fighting mechanics are very generic, don’t develop over time, and I feel like I’m just button mashing. There’s no way to really get a high hit combo and while the perfect dodges and perfect counters are pretty accurate, the fighting style doesn’t seem fluid at all. You can do a combo or two but always have to jump out of the way of another hit that’s coming or dodge multiple times to get away from gun shots. Then you just pick the closest enemy again. I understand these interruptions to your combos are designed to make the game more difficult but the hits or gunshots seem very abrupt and unusual to the rhythm that comes with games that have you fight a large number of enemies at once. (Not sure if I’m getting my point across)
I do like that I can pick whichever character I want to be and it is nice that all 4 level up at the same time so there isn’t a level gap, but there is definitely a gear gap. The game will give you a suit and weapons that generally matches the new level you’re at so you can “compete” with the leveled enemies but you have earn better gear after completing all the missions of that nights shift. I also feel torn because you have to unlock each layers ability separately. It’s kind of a hassle but I understand why they do it that way.
While this game focuses on helping Gotham from all the crimes that are happening during each night - meaning literally trying to stop all crimes that you come across - it feels like there is too much. I get distracted from the main story because I am forced to do all the side activities to level up my character and obtain new gear.
However my biggest concern of the game is all of the boss battles. If you’re at the recommended difficulty, I feel like I do almost no damage to the boss whatsoever. While playing, it almost felt like I was missing some aspect that would’ve made beating them easier. But all I ever could do was very slowly chip away at their health and most of the time I died feeling like there was no way I’m doing this correctly. I also never know if what the boss is doing is going to be a movement that I can dodge or I’m just going to be hit to matter what.
These are my opinions, but as much as I love the characters and Batman games I’m just trying to finish the story and move on to the next game..
Oh I forgot about the multi-player. While I guess it is a cool feature for playing with your friends, I didn’t like the fact that some person just pops into my crew and my missions and kinda just messed it up? I tried to be stealthy and defeat enemies quietly and then there goes “LEEROY JENKINS” and just goes right into the middle of the fight. I think it would be a huge asset to your friends, but strangers should be confirmed before hopping in. Maybe there was a setting for that but I only had like 5 people come in throughout the whole time so I didn’t really care to look.
