I watched this movie having no clue, until roughly 20 minutes in, that it was about the singer from the band, “Joy Division.” I clicked play only because of the black and white photo of a random good looking dude with an intense look in his eyes.
I caught myself remembering what it was like being young and learning about love by proxy especially in the scene that takes place in Ian’s bedroom where he is watching a make out session right in front of him. The way the actor (who is incredible) responds to this situation drew me into this film. The way the actress (amazing) responds to Ian in this scene showcases the charisma he had.
My youngest brother liked this band and I remember some of the songs and how they reminded me of Charles Bukowski’s poetry.
I enjoyed listening to the music and watching (yes we have seen these biopic stories before) Ian slowly allowing himself to dance/sing/create each time getting better, at the same time battling his poor decision making in marriage and procreation at such a young age, along with his illness and in living as an empathetic human being.
I highly recommend this film. The director, actors and producer made an excellent experience here.
