This was the worst musical I have ever seen. We have called it Hopesless: The Musical. And Pointless: the Musical. And Useless: the musical. The songs were boring, and the pacing of the show was dead slow, the cues were not tight. The two lead actors were good. But the dialogue, the book and the music were really bad. First 10 minutes was promising and then it's downhill from there. I don't understand how this made it to the West End. Where were the out of town tryouts?
Well, despite what critics wrote it was brought to the West End. I couldn't agree more with them:
The songs are disappointedly flat-footed.
The lyrics serve as exposition rather than raising the emotional drama.
The characters are peculiarly flat.
This is a paler version of the film, laden with ... less creativity and soul.
The theatrical deification of the 1990s evidently continues... for the worse.
