Section 31. It could have been the gritty, underworld version of the trek world we don't get to see. like Andor was to Star Wars. Strip away the perfection of what Star fleet has become and show, that not everyone has become better off, more left behind.
The movie itself did have some good parts. There is production value. The characters and writing let this down. The movie hit 20 minutes exactly when it went south for me and it was hard to recover after that. The doorbell went for a delivery and when I came back I'd forgotten what I was watching. I struggled to watch this sadly.
Personally, I blame the studios for the direction of this movie. Very few are taking risks to create something bold or new. The characters told us what was going on, there were no twists or turns that I didn't see coming. The cast did what the writers and directors asked. Maybe there are better bits on the editing floor that didn't fit with what the focus group wanted.
My advice is watch it. Don't think of Star Trek because if you do, you will be left wanting. Robot, Vulcan ๐ with a weird Irish pirate accent. No idea what they were thinking.
Live long and prosper my friends.
