The movie is definitely brilliant and shows the efforts put it by everyone in front and behind the camera. The actors have done justice to the parts given to them and special mention to Aishwarya Rai and Vikram for the breath-taking performance.
As audience we need to understand that PS is based on 5 books with an extensive story and multiple characters. As a reader you get confused with so many characters and start to recognise them only at the end of the first book so you can’t expect 2 films to be an exact replica of the books and the characters. If that was done, the film would be confusing, chaotic and never-ending.
Also, doing research on dynasties that existed 1000s of years back is not an easy feat. The team has managed to do that well enough despite limitations.
I’ve got to mention this. I’m writing this from Melbourne. I’ve always seen few people sit through the credits for Hollywood films but for the first time I saw everyone in the theatre sit back to watch the credits and clap at the end and that for me showed that this film will be remembered as one of the best in Indian cinema.
My advice to people who have read the books is don’t expect it to be an exactness and this is clearly given as a disclaimer in the beginning of both the parts. Try to appreciate the efforts and keep in mind that multiple directors since decades have tried and failed to create Ponniyin Selvan. This in itself is a big victory for Dir. Mani Ratnam.
