I spent 35 years as a devout mainstream Utah Mormon. I loved my time in the Church. I really did. And I love all my friends and family who are still Mormons. They are beautiful people.
(That said, I am much more psychologically healthy and at peace since leaving.)
I grew up in Logan, Utah in the 70s and 80s. I have to say that I think they are doing a wonderful job portraying a culture that often doesn't get depicted accurately. As someone who has studied both the doctrines of the church and church history, I can say that it has been accurately portrayed at least 95%. Especially for the time period depicted.
Growing up, I knew about polygamy, but not to the actual extent of it. But I honestly didn't know that there were LDS spinoff groups that were still practicing polygamy until after I was an adult.
Andrew Garfield is astonishing! He is doing a great job portraying an average Mormon guy going through a faith crisis.
As someone who went through my own excruciating faith crisis, I can attest to it being the most difficult thing that had ever happened to me. Fourteen years later, I still have religious trauma that I am working to heal.
For those people who the Mormon church works for, great! I'm so happy for you. And for those people who find their way out of the church, my heart goes out to you. Especially in Utah, this can be an extremely difficult thing to go through.
