I have never reviewed any type of screenplay, but I felt the impulse to say something about this one.
My God! Is there a sane, likeable character in this show? OK. There's Amy, there's Cecilia, and there are Rhett and his girl. OK. They're bad people for being complicit in a conspiracy to cover up a murder. Fine.
Now back to the rest of the show. Again: my God!! Is there a sane or likeable character in this show? Is there any reason at all for Royal Abbot's actions? Who's this hippie girl and why does she do what she does? Of course, they had to make somebody the only person who understands that time is somehow tangible. She's not alright upstairs? Yes, we get that. But is that enough to explain everything she does? Why does Cecilia clamp a dead bear cub's jaws on her own hand?
Yaaayy! Let's do something for social justice, shall we? Let's take a Native American female; let's make her a cynical sheriff; let's make her gay; and, let's give her a near-perfect family. While we are at it, how about we take a swipe at the Christians for not accepting her family situation as having holy sanction. All good and well. But, why did they have to make one of the few sane and likeable characters racist?
This whole thing moves along slowly. That's ok; it's set in a rural context. And life isn't always the sped up affair we see in film all the time.
I have rambled enough. Sorry.
