As a 74-year-old widowed and retired high school foreign language teacher, I felt a very strong connection with Kate. I, too, have lived abroad in Europe and South America. I have numerous fond memories of previous paramours and close friends from all over the country. I identified with her appreciation of nature’s beauty and the beauty of others in all walks of life. Having traveled all my life, I felt like Kate was writing to me; and I longed to join her for a good cup of coffee in a small town cafe. I have found that the greatest pleasures on road trips are taking the “road less traveled” instead of the interstate highways. I have had cancer for the past few years, and, like Kate, choose to spend my time and efforts on feeling grateful for all my experiences, never balking at trying something new. I have contemplated where to visit next, and Kate has convinced me to revisit New England with my fresh perspective.
