SPOILERS
I grew up on FNAF. Watched Markiplier and MatPat and countless others play and theorize. I was so excited for the movie, especially with all the hype up it got for being rated R for gore.
Honestly? I was a bit disappointed. I was hoping for a familiar storyline, but it was completely new and not engaging. I think it had potential, but I felt like it would've been a better idea to follow the plot of the Silver Eyes series, because that's at least an already established alternate plot. I realize that Silver Eyes is not so centered around the night guard, and more so the story of what happened afterwards to the daughter of William Afton and the friends of the missing kids, but I am certain that it would've been a better direction to go in.
Don't get me wrong, I think Matthew Lillard and Josh Hutcherson did a fantastic job, but the fort building scene was obsolete. The missing younger brother that was Mike's motivation felt forced and Vanessa somehow having his airplane was confusing. I understand it implies that her dad killed.his brother but why? It's not related to the movie at all. It's a weird plot hole. And speaking of plot holes there are several. Most of this movie feels like the writers played one or two days of FNAF 1 and wrote the script from memory. Balloon boy was the scariest of all the animatronics, and he's not even in the first game. Neither is Circus Baby, who was the animatronic meant for Abby.
The gore was also a letdown. There was so much excitement for all of the murdering and blood and especially the spring lock failure scene, but I was thoroughly disappointed on this front. The weird saw mask (no ties to the real game) never showed a result or even a spatter of blood on the wall. We just hear screams. The murders of all four of the break-in crew? A bloody handprint, a cupcake, and the saw mask again. Oh and let's not forget about the bite of 87! Why was she bit in half? it would've been incredible to see her get beheaded instead, because at least that can really be more like the bite of 87. And the spring lock failure. I'm so disappointed. For all the hype this got about being the most horrifying scene, we barely got to see anything!Yeah it looked painful, but all we got was some blood and pained groans. Have you heard what a spring lock failure will do? It involves spring loaded metal rods forcing their way through you incredibly fast. Including through your eyeballs. He should have been screaming. If you're going to make it rated R because of the blood and horror, maybe show us the actual blood and horror? Maybe I've just seen too many scary movies, but I've seen some awful scary movies with better gore than this.
That all being said, I am still a FNAF fan. I enjoyed the movie and will likely watch it again. I was hooked from the beginning and I absolutely loved the cameos from MatPat and Corey.
