Just go see it. Yes it checks all of the cliche Top Gun boxes, right down to the girl and the Porsche, but the story is great, the flying is great, the music is great, and the mission is great. I’m going to see it again, in theaters. The long story arc continues and follows a very satisfying course. Tom Cruise actually does some decent acting, and if scrutiny is the reason they delayed release, it was worth it. The edit was polished and it didn’t feel like a sequel for the sake of a sequel. It was a story unto itself. Jon Hamm is a nice addition to the franchise too. TLDR; Fresh, exciting, nostalgic, and beautifully crafted. The story is unique and great. The conflict is familiar but motivated differently.
