Amazing novel! The conceit of an American South that seceded after WWII gives it a depth that compensates for the sketchy, less convincing portait of Madame X, the narrator’s decesed wife. Although the faux-footnoting is a parody of serious biography, the account of the narrator’s quest as a biographer - interviews, documents, etc - is spot on, and entertaining. If only X were a more a more credible and interesting subject!
