Emilia Pérez is a disappointing and tone-deaf attempt at storytelling. The film feels both boring and deeply disrespectful to the Spanish language and Mexican culture. The director, in his arrogance, seems to have relied on superficial research—perhaps just Googling information about Mexico and using AI to translate songs and dialogues—resulting in an inauthentic portrayal. It is incredibly insensitive to exploit the serious issues of cartel violence and the disappearance of people in Mexico for entertainment. To top it all off, the director’s comments that Spanish is a ‘language of poor people’ is simply unacceptable. How did this movie even win awards?
