I was severely let down. It wasnt what I expected. It felt lower budget for such big names. It also seemed like not much time was spent making the movie. Im a fan of Tim Burton, so this film just didnt hit that bar for me.
There was lots that I "didnt get"(as in there was nothing leading to explanation), and it just wasnt as funny as it presented to be. Honestly, I didnt even find it that funny at all. I laughed only a couple of times. Im not sure if they took some kind of risk doing something different here, but it did not work for me. I wondered where the dark and creepy aspects were. You know Tim Burton's signature; the gloom, shadow, dread, downbeat, tragic bits. The "musical" part caught me off guard. I expected just a music bit which would end in 10 seconds, but alas a whole unfitting song? Not a fan of musicals, so to my dismay I questioned what I was watching.
The story felt rushed and there was no time to relate/bond with a character. It was like one of those jump around movies, here, there, everywhere. Instead of just sitting with a character/story line for a bit, there was a little bit of everyone bunched in. Like smashing too many ingredients on a stacked sandwich, chaotic and meaningless. Maybe its a product of our current state, with social media creating such short attention spans. Im not sure if it was supposed to be that type of "make fun of stupid films" movie, but I did not like the style.
It was also predictable, at least to me. I could see what was coming next(main story), and personally that creates a boring movie. The acting was just okay as well, id say the best performance would go to Santiago Cabrera who plays Richard. Though short, his act stood out the most to me. And because of so many people bunched in I questioned who is the main character here, who is the star of the show? The way it was portrayed made it hard to answer that question. Again, back to no bonding/relating/character building.
I doubt anyone who worked the movie would read my review, but id hope somehow they can reflect and see it the way I do so that the next film they create would steer away from this. I never thought Tim Burton could ever lose my interest. If you cant understand what I mean, watch any other of Tim Burton's films, and you can see the character development/bonding im speaking of. I think it wouldve been best to do a 1/2 or .5 movie before this one, because it really left a lot of "off scene" imagination/guessing. I hope they dont also "rush" a part 3, IF its even imagined yet. I wouldnt be looking forward to it, unless this style was revamped.
With that said, the prop art was good. It would be a cool ride at an amusement park. Id say second best act, although very little screen time was Monica Bellucci who played Delores. I was expecting co-star from the trailer, but was met short as she came across as a very far back character.
In conclusion, id recommend a watch, but I dont think it was well done.
