A real page-turner for me... not in a good way.
I hate DNF a book, so I had to push myself really hard to finish this one as quickly as possible just so I could move on to another.
Honestly, I donโt get the hype at all. The author spends about 80% of the book either hating on white people or educating the reader about language and history through footnotes--the big, lengthly footnotes some of which take up half the page. I found these annoying as they kept pulling me out of the story.
Thereโs very little story or character development, and the plot isnโt as deep as many claimโitโs pretty one-dimensional. According to the author, all white people are either evil or stupid, which, ironically, is a form of racism in itself. This book also fails as a fantasy novel. The world building is almost nonexistent and the magic system is basic.
That said, I have no doubt the author is highly knowledgeable in her academic field. However, she is not a strong storyteller, and reading this book often felt like reading an academic paper.
