A gut wrenching story that includes complex characters with complex back stories. I personally absolutely adored Khalid Hussaini's written style the way he comprehended emotions through metaphors is really admirable.
Khalid Hussaini has carried a lot of trauma from his time in Afghanistan so I had faith in him to carry the story neatly, And he did not disappoint, at least not me. This book is about the aspects of womenhood in general.
!Spoiler alert!
If I were to think about this book critically I think the biggest weakness here is the understatement of how traumatized the characters have had been, I'm still arguing with myself on this.
Because Khalid Hussaini did write about how they still carry trauma in them but I still think it's not enough. Laila wanting to go back to Afghanistan was either bravery or just unrealistic. I'm having trouble imagining a truly traumatized 24 year old to.
