To preface my review I would like to say that as a stand-alone game this is an awesome 5 star game.
Ubisoft, the publisher, has an amazing series of games in their catalog, Far Cry, Assassinโs Creed, Anno, Settlers, Watch Dogs, plus several others. On top of that they have an amazing game engine that really does open world games brilliantly.
Here lies the fly in the ointment. When I first played Assassinโs Creed Odyssey, I was blown away by it. Next came Assassins Creed Valhalla and not so much. The same can be said for Far Cry. Blown away by Far Cry 5, then comes Far Cry 6 and not so much. Itโs like having sex with the same girl, but to change things up she dyes her brunette hair blonde. The sex is still great, but you still are feeling slightly underwhelmed, compared to when you first started banging her 6 months ago. More of the same.
Now with Far Cry 6 there is an even a bigger elephant in the room. A game series called Just Cause. Ubisoft WHY WOULD YOU make the theme of FC6 the same as Just Cause? For anyone who has spent a SERIOUS amount of time playing any of the 4 Just Cause games, like I have, it is impossible avoid comparison, since their storylines and backdrop are almost identical.
For those that donโt know, Just Cause has always taken place in some South American type country with an evil dictator, with different guerrilla factions fighting to liberate their beloved country. Sound familiar?
The Just Cause series is the king of the hill when it comes to open world, fully destructible environments, big explosions and lots of mayhem. And if that wasnโt enough donโt forget Ricoโs game changing signature grappling tool.
So basically what it comes down to, IMO, is that the latest Just Cause games 3 & 4, are just more fun to play, and have more to offer than FC6 in EVERY aspect of game play, with the exception of stealth. Hands down. And you can buy them at a fraction of the cost. If you have never played Just Cause 3 or 4, stop playing Far Cry and head over to Steam right now!!
So for us Just Cause veterans we are REALLY left feeling disappointed with FC6. Now I can see why Ubisoft brought in Giancarlo Esposito to lend some star power to this title. They knew they were going to need that something extra. While heโs great, he is not enough to dig them out of the deep hole they find themselves in.
