While I love the structure and fine writing of Cunningham’s novel, Day, I found the characters somewhat unconvincing- especially the children. I have two precocious granddaughters who are Violet’s age, and his portrayal of her is way off- she could not possibly be a 5 year old. The improvised “character”, Wolfe, created by Robbie and his sister, also left me cold. It seemed an artifice which did not deepen a sense of their characters, other than perhaps their mutual wish to escape their realities.
I loved The Hours and have re-read it several times, but this novel is a disappointment in comparison. I have been tempted not to finish it.
